India tax law changed on 1 April 2026

The Income-tax Act, 2025 came into force on 1 April 2026 and applies from Tax Year 2026-27. It replaces the Income-tax Act, 1961, reduces 819 sections to 536, renumbers throughout, and replaces “previous year” and “assessment year” with a single “tax year”.

What this means for the section numbers on this site: they are 1961 Act numbers. The 1961 Act still governs earlier years, so a notice about an earlier assessment year will still cite them. For anything arising under the new tax year, the numbering has changed and you must confirm the current section before relying on it. We have deliberately not guessed the new numbers — inventing a citation is worse than telling you to check.
